Where should we eat?
Man, I hate that question. But not because I don’t have an opinion— it’s actually quite the opposite.
Good food is easy to find here in Los Angeles. Every single neighborhood has a signature staple that’s sure to quench the deepest hunger pangs of the pickiest eaters.
But after being in LA for nearly three decades, I’ve registered quite a large list of my preferred restaurants, coffee shops, and bars— and I can tell you that good food isn’t always the reason to visit a quintessential LA hang out. Just like the celebrities that drive the streets of this city, the eateries here also play their roles, depending on the context of your visit.
And the contexts we find ourselves in are often sprawled across the many counties of the humongous city we refer to as “LA”:
Are you stuck near LAX, waiting out a delayed flight, looking for a solid (but quick) breakfast?
Are you throwing a birthday dinner and need a place that can support an afterparty, but you have guests coming from all 360 degrees of ‘the zone’?
Do you want to suss out your first date over a drink, but need some post-buzz activities in case things go extra well?
We all have a reasoning behind our suggestions, and I certainly have mine.
The Weekly Angeleno is my gastro-diary, a place to record and share my thoughts about the best dining experiences that LA has to offer.
My hope is that this project will help you answer the difficult question of where to eat with a little more grace.
