Among the many types of food in LA, it’s quite common to see authentic cuisine get overshadowed by the more trendy options. But after the rush of trying a new restaurant is over, I find myself craving the Ol’ Faithfuls. The place I end up eating at the most in any given month is a nondescript eatery called India’s Restaurant.
The strip-mall classic located right behind Akbar doesn’t disappoint. I have to admit, I mostly order delivery from India’s. A couple times a month, I find myself craving their delicious lamb samosas— ground lamb and a spice blend, inside thick samosa dough that’s been fried to a crisp. It’s become routine to start an order on the way home from LAX.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you had a similar regimen— after all, it seems India’s is a pretty popular delivery option for us eastsiders, judging by the many bags take-out waiting for pickup the last time I ate there. But the restaurant isn’t only for take-away; India’s has a very peculiar vibe that’s worth checking out in person.
Tri-color walls adorned by embroidered compositions surround the tables and booths, and the outdated furniture adds to the charm— the restaurant probably hasn’t changed much since it opened in 1989. It’s an awkwardly quiet spot to eat at, so it favors either a group of 4+, or a low key dinner. If you’re lucky, a car might pull up into the spot in front of the restaurant, breaking up the conversation with a beam of light— a bit Bladerunner, but I like it.
Ordering family style is a must— there are so many great things to try here, not limited to my favorites: Lamb Vindaloo, Chaana Masala, Saag Paneer, and Green Coconut Lamb. If you’ve ordered from India’s Restaurant online but never been in person, try it out. A good excuse might be their weekend brunch special: $18 for all you can eat, including champagne.
