There are a many taco trucks in LA, but I always try to find “the one” in each neighborhood where I’ve lived. Once, I got really lucky, and found a truck that I still go to, even though I don’t live anywhere near it.
I was reminded of this specific truck earlier this week, driving down the 10 freeway on the 4th of July. When David Gantz and I used to live in South Central, the 4th was a very special time of the year. All of our neighbors would pour out onto the street and light up fireworks they’d been collecting over the months leading up to the holiday. It was a a peaceful warzone with fireworks blasting off in every different direction, hitting palm trees and setting off car alarms…. all while me, David, and all our neighbors watched gleefully and sipped Modelos. Once the streets were full of ash, and the sky full of smoke— we’d head to J’s Mexican Grill.
J’s is a truck— it moves around— but I’ve always enjoyed their menu at the corner of West Adams and Normandie, close to USC. The truck used to be bright orange, but even now painted black, it’s very easy to spot with its neon sign and bright LEDs.
The menu is simple: they have what they have, until they run out. The Torta Cubana, Shrimp Burrito, and Sopes de Carnitas are all A+. They also usually have all the fixins, like fresh onion, parsley, radish and cucumber to go with whatever you order. The service is friendly, and the clientele unique: a mix of fratty college kids, lifelong angeleno neighbors, and gas station dwellers.
My go-to order is the California burrito— it’s out of this world.
Unlike a lot of trucks in LA that will give you a Chipotle sized burrito, J’s California Burrito is packed tight. It’s dense, filled with salsa, fresh herbs, and crispy diner style fries mixed in with your choice of meat. Plus, the horchata is a must— just the right amount of chalky and not too sweet— which makes it the perfect combination if you’re a spice-head.
Nowadays, if I am anywhere near the neighborhood, I’ll try to time it right so that I can end up at J’s on my way home. I have to admit, I’ve showed up to their regular digs and been disappointed to see the corner empty. Luckily, they’ve got a location in Downtown with more reliable hours. So, if you live close to either one, or you just want to change up your regular taco routine, I highly recommend J’s Mexican Grill.
